Final reflection

During the semester, we work on literature review, public awareness campaign and website as a group, which bring me a lot of experience about writing on science.

There are 3 members in our group, Ian Rohac, Jessica Rambao and me. I found that there are some linguistic differences between us. Those difference are based on mind. For example, when we need to come up an idea, I usually make a general idea like “gun banning” and “beach pollution”. And Lan usually come up with more specific idea. “Microplastic pollution on beach” is Lan’s idea based on the general topic “beach pollution”.

There are several peer review sections during the class. Those peer reviews are really helpful. When we finished our infographic, we felt it was not perfect. However, we can’t find the specific bad point. During the peer review, they told us the color contrast between the words and the background is not enough. Then, we suddenly realized it. It was so obvious, but without the peer review, we may not be able to figure it out.

Also, I find that the range of the audience is very important. At the beginning, we the age range is between 18 to 30 years old. But it was hard for us to start the infographic writing. Professor told us this is too large. Then, we set it to 18-24 years old which is same to us and it became successful. The reason is people in different age ranges will have difference preference. It is hard to catch all of them in one infographic.

During the group work, we use text and email to exchange our opinions. Jessica and I wrote blogs, and Lan wrote other parts and organize everything and put them onto our website. Then, we will look into our website and make some suggestion. That’s how we work as a writing group.

When I was writing, I like to think of what is my own opinion. For example, after professor told us we need to narrow the range of audience age, I was thinking that college students usually have not form the habit to use those plastic products and they could have the desire to do something to protect the environment. What we need to do is let them aware the severity of the plastic pollution. And the affect can keep for longer time because those college will be the future of the world. Also, our campus already banned plastic straw. So, it will be easier to be accepted.
